| | TRUMPF’s TrumaForm, direct laser forming machine, enables the rapid single-step creation of ‘correct specification’ metal prototype/pre-finished components, or tooling, by laser directly from CAD data. Direct laser forming is the layer-by-layer building up of complex, three dimensional metal and components. It uses a laser beam to melt layers of pure metal powder that solidify into oxide-free, pore-free and crack-free, metallic structures.
Unlike sintering and other rapid prototyping processes, direct laser forming does not use fluxes or binding agents to bond the raw material to create the required structure; it simply uses the powder density and the beam quality of the TRUMPF disc laser to create homogenous metal components. |
Direct laser formed parts are ‘real’ parts and can be used for more than just visualisation or simulation. They can be incorporated into further downstream manufacturing operations and their use and performance in pre-production trials provide real data, first time, shortening time to market.
Direct laser formed parts can be used to make items that would otherwise be impossible to produce, particularly items with large or complex internal cavities. What’s more, these parts can be laser welded and incorporated into larger structures and assemblies.
